Tour of Croatia is amazing cycling international race passing some of the most beautiful parts of Croatia sending worldwide postcard of my country from land and air.
Race is divided in six stages and cyclists are driving over 1000 km all over Croatia finishing in Zagreb at Saint Mark’s Square where I was ready with my cameras.
Well I could be better prepared, I could have asked for press pass to have access to podium where ceremony was held, choose shooting locations more wisely but I can’t change it now.
I was shooting with 2 cameras, 1DX MK II paired with 70-200 f/2.8 and 5D MK II with 17-40 f/4 for some pannings when the cyclist are close to me.
Weather and locations were very tricky – strong shadows at one part and harsh light on the other. Very hard situation to expose correctly.
For me shooting races like this is very hard since you don’t have much chance to experiment and correct your mistakes. Cyclists are very fast and basically you have only one or two chances to make your shots. I chose location hoping that I would have a front shot with my tele lens, then run on a corner for wide panning and then another tele shot in the back. But as I said, the guys are really fast and if you don’t know exactly what and how to do it you won’t get your shot.
