Very often people are asking me what camera they should buy, how much they should charge, how much photos to deliver to client, should they give RAW files if asked…
And then what? I will answer to your questions and you will do what I say? No you won’t. Stop being unsecure, stop looking what other people are doing and do what you think is right.
How much should I charge?
How the f… should I know how much money do you want or need, what are your arrangements with the client, what are your interests in this shooting, how much is your time worth…
E.g. you are shooting some interiors outside your town. First thing you should do is go to Google maps, enter your address and destination and see how many kilometers is that in both ways, see if there is any tolls you need to pay and then calculate your gas cost. Or see how much is your bus/train whatever ticket if you don’t have car. That is your first part of calculation. I lost some “clients” on this step because the obviously thought I will magically teleport to their place, free of charge off course.
If it’s a longer trip you need to sleep somewhere and eat something. Put that also in your equation.
Are you going solo or you need assistant. Put his fee in that table.
And now comes the hard part. How much do you worth for yourself? Will you be satisfied with 100 $/€ or maybe 1.000? Will that price cover all your expenses and your time? I really don’t know that.
I know I would rather stay at home playing with my kid than run all over for couple of euros. But maybe you need to pay your bookie next week so you need money badly before he sends some guys with strange accent and a baseball bat at your doorstep. Or bank wants to take your apartment because you skipped one monthly payment. I really don’t know that – you do.
There is also a fear of losing client if you overcharge. Ask yourself would you rather lose a client or let him go all over you? Guess what. I don’t know what you want – you do.
What camera to buy?
Amateurs will usually want something that can shoot everything, at daylight, night, in distance, in front of you, it should be small, and off course cheap. And they will be deeply disappointed when you try to explain to them that that kind of camera doesn’t exist. But there are also people shooting for some time and still not knowing what they want.
Should I buy 7D MK II or 5D MK IV? God damn it…What do you shoot, how much money can you spend. Do you need full frame or crop? Again…only you know the answer to that question.
I was also in a dilemma wandering should I buy 5D MK IV or 1DX MK II. But I wrote on paper cons and pros and decided by myself. That’s the only way to do it. Other people can’t help you with that kind of decisions.
Should I buy PC or Mac?
There are fanatics and haters on both sides. Some people want stability, peace and quiet and don’t want to be bothered with constant hardware and software upgrades, some people like to be in control of everything at every moment. Both systems will run same software, both systems can be very expensive so you are the one that should decide what camp to choose.
I can tell you that I like Apple and have everything from Apple for last 7 years, but if you like to unscrew your case and constantly put something in and out, or you have nightmares about not being able to change graphic cards then you already know that you are not going to buy Apple.
I can’t help you with that decision – you can.
